GCompris Educational Software

Gcompris is a great program for helping kids learn. It is great for ages 3 up to about 8 or 9. The upper age level kind of differs by the maturity and English level of the kids. I find it very useful for my own children and when I put it into a class with my 1st and 2nd grade students, they enjoyed it. They used to improve their English.

Gcompris is a powerful suite of educational programs. They have a paint program, several games of skills and of thinking and best of all for us TEFL teachers, they have some really nice vocabulary study modules. Students can practice their ABC’s or they can practice finding words that are spoken to them. It’s fun and educational so spending a few hours on it can be a real blast for your students. My students liked the math tutorial modules the most.

The best thing about Gcompris is that the Linux version is free. A limited Windows version is also available for free, but the full version is limited to people wishing to pay for the full version. Why? In order to encourage people to adopt Linux. You can find more about Gcompris on the Gcompris site.
